CLASSROOM HOMEWORK POLICY
Homework is a vital component of the learning process for a number of reasons. It teaches responsibility and organizational skills, while reviewing and supplementing what has been covered in school each day. It serves to reinforce learning, develop work and study skills, and helps students prepare for upcoming work.
Homework will be regularly assigned Monday through Thursday. When given, Friday assignments will tend to be shorter in length, but may be necessary in order to reinforce a skill or concept that was taught that day. In addition to written assignments, students will be required to read each night for at least twenty minutes. Extra time should be allowed for projects and for test study. Spelling tests will be given weekly. Other tests will be announced when scheduled.
Students will be expected to give homework their best effort and to submit all homework on time. Homework can be turned in one day late for a reduced grade. After that it will not be accepted. Of course, students absent due to illness will be given the necessary time to make up missed assignments. In the event of a missing homework assignment, an"Incomplete/Late Homework Notice"will be sent home in your child’s agenda book to inform you that the homework was not completed. Please be sure to check your child’s agenda book daily. The notice should be signed and returned the following school day with the completed homework assignment (it will still, however, be recorded as a late homework assignment). If the assignment is not completed it will result in a zero homework grade. Please note that late assignments and zeros will result in a lower grade on the report card.
If there is a legitimate reason why your child is not able to finish a homework assignment, please send a note to me on the day the homework is due stating the reason it was not completed.
Remember, parents are important contributors in making homework a successful learning experience. In making homework a top priority and providing the necessary supplies, environment, regularly scheduled time, praise and support, a parent can make an invaluable contribution to a student’s education.
